OIDF hosts unique global demo of digital ID interoperability

Published May 1, 2025
  • Representing a major milestone in digital identity progress, this unique event will showcase global stakeholder collaboration, technological innovation, and a clear focus on real-world applicability.
  • Designed for a multi-stakeholder audience, the OpenID Foundations invites interested parties to join the virtual webinar.

The OpenID Foundation (OIDF), a global leader in open identity standards, is hosting an online demonstration showcasing the next generation of digital identity credentials.

The webinar represents a crucial milestone, showcasing real-world and proven interoperability of the OIDF’s OpenID for Verifiable Presentation (OID4VP), High Assurance Interoperability Profile (HAIP) and the W3C’s Digital Credentials API (DC API) specifications, among multiple wallets and verifiers, and across regions and with the ISO/IEC SC17 18013-5 mdl/mdoc and IETF SD-JWT VC credential formats.

Taking place on Monday, May 5th, 2025 (4:30-6:00pm CET / 10:30am-12:00pm ET / 7:30-9:00am PT), the showcase will prove that these specifications are not just theoretical, but ready for adoption.

Parties interested in the subject matter are invited to join the virtual webinar and hear firsthand from the implementers and VIP representatives from three governments across three regions.

Participants in the interoperability demonstration will include 10 teams of wallets and verifiers as well as technical standards experts from organizations like 1Password, Animo, Bundesdruckerei, Google, Mattr, Microsoft, the NIST NCCoE, and Spruce.

A significant milestone for global digital identity

This demonstration is the product of global cooperation among government contributors, industry leaders, peer standards organizations, and other technical experts who are committed to building scalable and interoperable protocols that are robust, secure, and reliable.  Together, they ensure that the specifications have been designed with an international and multi-stakeholder perspective on digital identity, so implementers can have confidence deploying them.

The interoperability event will also demonstrate the NIST NCCoE Digital Identities - Mobile Driver’s License (mDL) architecture, which leverages the OID4VP, DC API and HAIP specifications as part of their “open a bank account” use case. The OIDF is proud to act as a participant in this project, as a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) signatory since August 2024.

“The tools at the heart of this interoperability demonstration are built with security and privacy in mind, protecting users’ personal information while simplifying the process of proving identity online, cross platforms and cross device,” said Gail Hodges Executive Director of the OpenID Foundation.

“Beyond the technical safeguards, these advances stand to benefit millions if not billions of people as more and more jurisdictions and institutions issue credentials and they become widely accepted”.

The demonstration will include demonstrations of interoperability by the participating wallet and verifier developer teams from 10+ organizations, and offer testimonials from the developers on their experience deploying the standards. VIP representatives of governments in three regions have also been invited to share their observations on the interoperability demonstration, and their plans to use the standards in their jurisdictions.

Together the implementers hope to offer useful feedback to finalize the specifications within the respective standards bodies. The OIDF intends to publish the three specifications (OID4VP, OID4VCI, and HAIP) as final specifications soon.

Joseph Heenan, Co-Chair of the Digital Credentials Protocols WG, said “Our demonstration not only proves the interoperability of our evolving standards, but also reinforces our commitment to empowering billions worldwide with secure, seamless, and privacy-preserving digital identity solutions. With these standards moving swiftly toward finalization and implementation readiness, we call on all stakeholders to join us on this journey toward a secure, interoperable, and user-centric digital future.”

Who should attend?

This webinar is designed for a multi-stakeholder audience, including:

  • Implementers of digital identity services such as digital identity credential issuers, digital wallet providers, or relying party verifiers in all sectors (financial services, retail, healthcare, and others),
  • European Digital Identity Wallet Community Stakeholders seeking proven digital identity solutions that align to the Architecture Reference Framework,
  • Government officials involved in the issuance, acceptance, or regulation of digital identity credentials,
  • Standards experts from OIDF, W3C, ISO/IEC, FIDO, IETF, and beyond.

What attendees will see

  • Interoperability demonstrations of OpenID for Verifiable Presentations and the W3C Digital Credentials API working seamlessly across multiple wallets and verifier platforms using several DCQL queries.
  • Two initial credential types, both ISO mDocs and Selective Disclosure JWTs (SD-JWTs).
  • High Assurance Interoperability Profile, which delivers interoperability and security by default.
  • Insights on how implementers can adopt these standards today, such building against the freely available open source test suite available from the OpenID foundation.

Acknowledging the collaborative effort

The OpenID Foundation extends sincere gratitude to the many standards experts, interop participants, and government stakeholders who have tirelessly contributed to these specifications.

Special thanks are due to:

“Microsoft is dedicated to leading the advancement of secure and privacy-preserving digital identity solutions. This event highlights our commitment to creating a seamless and interoperable digital identity ecosystem through collaboration with global stakeholders. By participating in the development of open standards, we are ensuring that digital identities are universally accessible and trusted, empowering everyone to engage confidently in the digital world,” said: Juliana Cafik, Principal Program Manager, Identity Standards Architect at Microsoft.

“Android is deeply committed to continuing to foster open ecosystems and standards that prioritize user security and privacy," said Rohey Livne, Group Product Manager, Android at Google. "This collaboration and interoperability on standards across the industry are a significant step towards a future where secure digital identities are seamless and universally accessible, empowering both developers and users."

About the OpenID Foundation

The OpenID Foundation (OIDF) is a global open standards body committed to helping people assert their identity wherever they choose. Founded in 2007, we are a community of technical experts leading the creation of open identity standards that are secure, interoperable, and privacy preserving. The Foundation’s OpenID Connect standard is now used by billions of people across millions of applications. In the last five years, the Financial Grade API has become the standard of choice for Open Banking and Open Data implementations, allowing people to access and share data across entities. Today, the OpenID Foundation’s standards are the connective tissue to enable people to assert their identity and access their data at scale, the scale of the internet, enabling “networks of networks” to interoperate globally. Individuals, companies, governments and non-profits are encouraged to join or participate. Find out more at openid.net.
